Wyatt’s New Character Borrowed From Former Star, Goldust Update

As seen during last night’s episode of Monday Night Raw, Bray Wyatt made his return at last. This marked Wyatt’s first appearance on WWE television in nearly a year. Although some fans have been clamoring to see the former WWE Champion back onscreen again, it was clear that Wyatt is a changed man. Wyatt returned as the host of a show called the “Firefly Fun House.” Wyatt appeared has lost weight, was sporting a new hairstyle and different clothes, and he promised that he is not the same person that he was before he went on hiatus last year. Wyatt had a cardboard standee of himself nearby and proceeded to take a chainsaw and then cut the head off of his former self before ending the segment.
It will certainly be interesting to see what WWE does with Wyatt’s new character, but last night’s segment was apparently suggested by a former WWE star in the past. According to PWInsider’s Elite Audio show, Cliff Compton originally pitched the idea back when he was with the company. Compton wanted to do a segment similar to the one that Wyatt did last night, but he wanted to take a chainsaw to a cutout of John Cena. WWE’s creative team reportedly shot down Compton’s idea at the time because they believed that it was too graphic. There have been numerous instances of WWE recycling past ideas for other wrestlers years later before, and that may be the case here with Bray Wyatt’s strange new character.
Dustin Rhodes (formerly known as Goldust) will be taking on his brother Cody Rhodes at AEW’s Double or Nothing show in May. It was a surprising announcement for AEW to make given that WWE never confirmed that Dustin had been released or that he quit the company. It was previously reported that Dustin’s WWE contract expired and neither side opted to renew it. However, Dave Meltzer said on Wrestling Observer Radio this week that he actually requested his release from the company back in January. WWE officials then granted him his release on the condition that he wait until at least April 19th to announce his appearance for Double or Nothing. The Rhodes vs. Rhodes match takes place on May 25th.
